Cafe opens just in time for BIG LIT Festival.

The Crafty Crow

The Crafty Crow, a new vegetarian cafe, is about to open its doors in Gatehouse of Fleet.

‘We are very excited to announce our new vegetarian cafe, craft and gift shop will be opening in Gatehouse just before the BIG LIT Festival’, says Kerry Orr who set up the business five months ago with partner William (Billy) Skinner. The pair has been frantically painting the premises (formerly Franca Bruno’s shop) and buying new fixtures, fittings and furniture to open in time to host four events across the five day Festival.

‘We are delighted The Crafty Crow is a participatory venue this year’ says Festival Director Chrys Salt MBE, 'they are such a lively and collaborative couple I have no doubt their new enterprise will be a popular addition to the town’.

Kerry and Billy will be hosting The Crichton Writers at lunch time on May 2nd with poetry and prose about the eclectic nature of trees. On May 3rd local poet David Mark Williams, already making his mark with a second collection, is paired with Charlie Gracie from The Central Belt with his remarkable first novel with The Crafty Crow’s soup and sandwiches adding lunchtime nourishment. May 4th sees them hosting two dangerously powerful collections - Nicola Jackson, winner of The Geoff Stevens Memorial Poetry Prize and fresh from the Cheltenham Poetry Festival - launches her book Dangerous Women, with Monaive’s very own Annie Wright her vivid new collection Dangerous Pursuit of Yellow. A supper of pasta, garlic bread and salad served alongside.

Last but not least, on May 5th Alan McClure, Gatehouse’s own Alan of Galloway, will entertain with his original songs and poems acclaimed for their lyrical and musical diversity – BIG LIT’s Sunday Lunch treat.

‘It is part of BIG LIT’s brief to bring together local talent with talent from further afield’ says Chrys, ‘and there is certainly a huge amount of talent in the Region! The Crafty Crow’s events are free. Folks can just ‘drop in’ on the day or better still, reserve a seat on 01557 814000. We wish The Crafty every success with its new adventure’.
